The Service Premium

The Service Premium is designed to support children with parents serving in the regular British armed forces.
Pupils attract the premium if they meet the following criteria:

  • one of their parents is serving in the regular armed forces
  • one of their parents served in the regular armed forces in the last 3 years
  • one of their parents died while serving in the armed forces and the pupil is in receipt of a pension under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) and the War Pensions Scheme (WPS)

Since 2013, schools have been allocated £300 in Service Premium for each eligible pupil. For more information from the Department for Education, please click here.

The school spends its Service Premium funding in the following ways:

  • towards the cost of funding the work of our Transition and Service Premium Learning Mentor (see above);
  • towards the cost of 1:1 and small group ‘close the gap’ and extension tuition for Service Pupils with our specialist Learning Mentors & TAs or with a qualified teacher;
  • towards the costs of 1:1 or small group pastoral support for children based around a variety of play therapies;
  • towards the cost of specialist training, SCISS meetings etc for our Transition and Service Premium Learning Mentor and Senior Leadership Team;

To find out how much was spent on each area of support and the positive way in which that support impacted on the achievement of our Service Pupils, please read our Service Premium Statement of Impact 2016-17 below.

As the interventions listed above had such positive outcomes last year, we will be spending the Service Premium in the same way this year.
